As my first day as the newly appointed regional director for Anti-Defamation League New England was International Holocaust Remembrance Day, my first official act was to attend a meaningful ceremony at the New England Holocaust Memorial, hosted by the German and Israeli embassies. It was very powerful to hear each consul general speak about the millions murdered at the hands of the Nazis, and their countries’ dedication to ensuring that this will never happen again. This was a fitting…
Thursday, after a despicable propaganda ceremony in Gaza, Hamas terrorists returned the bodies of Oded Lifshitz, kidnapped at 85 years old and murdered in captivity, and Ariel and Kfir Bibas, who were just four and nine months old when they too were kidnapped on Oct. 7, 2023. In a cruel act, the fourth body promised to be that of Ariel and Kfir’s mom, Shiri Bibas, did not match her DNA or that of any known hostage. Shiri’s remains were finally returned on Friday. Forever burned in…
The Massachusetts Teachers Association continues to face heat for its “antisemitic list of resources” that were highlighted during a recent State House hearing, including a poster of dollar bills folded into a Star of David. Groups and elected officials are calling for the teachers union’s leaders to pull the plug on these “vile antisemitic” educational resources after MTA President Max Page was grilled during last week’s meeting of the…
A 34-year-old man who reportedly had a cache of guns and a Nazi flag in his home has been arrested after allegedly posting threats to rape Jewish women and inciting others to shoot people outside synagogues. Beverly man Matthew Scouras, who was busted following a tip from the feds, is accused of making “frightening and disturbing threats targeting the Jewish community.” The FBI National Threat Operations Center last week alerted Beverly Police about a resident posting several…
The Massachusetts Executive Office of Public Safety & Security’s 2023 report on hate crimes identified a 70 percent increase in incidents of anti-Jewish crime from 2022 to 2023. More were reported in 2023, 119, than in any of the previous eight years, according to past hate crime reports, and marked the third straight year in which Jews and Jewish organizations were targeted more frequently than the year before. The state posts its yearly hate crime reports going back to 2015, and…
‘Jarring, unexpected, and unprofessional’ Local educators and the ADL are pushing for an apology from MassCUE after the group’s recent “jarring” conference when speakers reportedly spewed “hateful” anti-Israel and Holocaust rhetoric. MassCUE’s fall education tech conference — held in partnership with the Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents at Gillette Stadium — apparently went off the rails during a…
A Young Man Escapes Nazi-Occupied Poland When Ben Zion Kalb (later “Colb”) escaped from Poland to Slovakia shortly after the German invasion of Poland (September 1, 1939), and then proceeded to rescue his fiancée and well more than 1,000 other Jews from death in the Holocaust, he surely would not have imagined that, 85 years later, his granddaughter, Sara Colb, would continue and honor his legacy via her own advocacy for the Jewish people. From Ben Zion to Sara,…
by Opinion Contributor Sara A. Colb is the deputy director of ADL New England. Last month, the Belfast City Council stepped well out of its local government lane to weigh in on matters of foreign policy, which it is ill equipped to do. The council voted, as reported by the Bangor Daily News, “to divest from companies that activists say have contributed to the disproportionate killing of tens of thousands of Gaza’s residents” and “prohibit future investments in such…
I am an American Jew, and the grandchild of Holocaust survivors. Like so many Jews in this country, I was raised on stories of unthinkable horror. My grandfather’s parents were rounded up with other Jews from their town and shot dead. His brother was tortured and killed by SS officers. His sister, her husband, and baby were killed. My grandmother’s parents and four brothers were murdered, leaving her the sole surviving member of her family. When news of the atrocities Hamas…
Antisemitic incidents have spiked across the U.S. in the year since the Oct. 7 Hamas terrorist attack in Israel — an “avalanche” of disturbing reports as assaults, death threats, Nazi salutes and more have been reported at local schools. More than 10,000 antisemitic incidents have been recorded in the U.S. since last year’s Oct. 7 Hamas terrorist attack, according to new data from the Anti-Defamation League. This is the highest number of incidents ever recorded in any…
